All Aboard Rolls into Bryan Station

There're a couple hundred people in the gallery from which I'm stealing a moment to say, "What an opening!" The enthusiasm is infectious; many are discovering artists new to them, and historical facts about Vermont and the country, through the lore of the railroads. What a key culture in our history - no wonder the image of the train has captured the imaginations of all ages for generations.

ALL ABOARD ARRIVING AT BRYAN MEMORIAL JUNCTION

The doors opened this morning on All Aboard, Bryan Memorial Gallery's winter exhibition. In our glee, curator Fiona Cooper Fenwick, data manager Marcie Vallette and Executive Director Mickey Myers stood at the gallery's front door, mimicking train sounds. Then it was back to work to continue fine tuning over 500 historical objects, paintings, trains, toys, posters and videos that offer delight and information about railroad culture. Join us this weekend, Sunday, February 5 at 1 for the Artists Roundtable, and 2 - 4 for a reception in honor of the artists and lenders. We'll have you home in time for the Super Bowl.

No sooner did we open our exhibition NEW ENGLAND PLEIN AIR PAINTERS PAINT VERMONT, than two of our NEPAP guests, Barbara Lussier (CT)and Mike Graves (MA), were back at their easels. This was the scene along Route 15 in Jeffersonville yesterday around 5:30.

Remember the fun we had last summer at the first Jeffersonville Festival of the Arts?
It was such a successful day, celebrating in part the 25th anniversary of Bryan Memorial Gallery, that Cambridge Arts Council is making it an annual event. This year,, the festival takes place on Saturday, August 14. Go to www.artsfestvt.com for information about how you can participate, but here's a hint: the application deadline is March 15, 2010, so even though August 14 seems light years away, the deadline for declaring your participation will be upon us momentarily.

First Festival of the Arts in Jeffersonville

It's difficult to know how to exclaim enough about the First Festival of the Arts in Jeffersonville, last Saturday. Many people worked to make it a success, but major credit goes to the Cambridge Arts Council - Paige Kelly, Susan Lassiter, Ron Carter and Daphne Allen. Over 300 people visited the gallery; 50 artists lined the sidewalks, painting and displaying their work; artwork sold, children's faces were painted, yummies were served up by the local restaurants, and in short, we'll probably be doing it again next year. Pictures above are from the camera of our board chair, Charlie Love.

Alden Bryan Memorial Medal Awarded to Neil Drevitson

The Alden Bryan Medal for Best of Show and First Place was awarded to Neil Drevitson of Woodstock, VT for his 36" x 48" pastel, "The Awakening."

Artist Rett Sturman of Stowe, Vermont was the juror of the exhibition, and of its prizes. The prizes were made possible through a generous contribution from the Mary and Alden Bryan Art Fund of the Vermont Community Foundation. Congratulations, Neil!

Land and Light Second and Third Prizes

The Second and Third Place Prizes were awarded to Caleb Stone of Ipswich, MA for his painting "Harvard Boat House," and Craig Pursley of Bath, New Hampshire, for his painting "Shards of Winter." Stone was the winner of the Alden Bryan Memorial Medal in 2008.

Harald Aksdal: Impermanence, pen and ink

Bryan Memorial Gallery opens two exhibits this Sunday, July 26, 2009.

Artists Roundtable at 2 PM will feature Harald Aksdal and Monica Sweetser from the FINE LINES exhibition and Neil Drevitson and Craig Pursley from LAND AND LIGHT. Reception is from 3 - 5, and LAND AND LIGHT awards will be presented at 3:30 PM. Join us! There's no admission charge, but there'll be tons of interesting people and two stunning exhibitions.
